The "Jerusalem" Solution J. Domínguez, M.D.
There are four important facts to be kept at Jerusalem: 1- Guarantee the status of Jerusalem as an international city, with access to anybody in the world, and specially with freedom of action for the three monotheistic religions with so many sacred places in the city: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity... without any kind of customs or checking points. 2- Jerusalem may be the Capital City of Israel. 3- Jerusalem may be the Capital City of Palestine. 4- Jerusalem may be the Capital City of the Christians. Because Israel-Palestine should be only one Country, as stated in the Peace Process, but every major religion may have their own kind of internal Government.
How to accomplish it?: 1- Leave Jerusalem as it is right now, with the same kind of government, status, and properties. 2- The Jews can use the city as their Government Capital, if so desired, using the properties they actually own. 3- The Muslims can use the city as their Government Capital, if so desired, using the properties they actually own. 4- The Christians again, can use the city as their Government Capital, if so desired, using the properties they actually own.
The Worst Solution: The worst solution for the city of Jerusalem would be to divide it into two cities, with two governments... it would another Berlin with a wall!... may be not a wall of concrete, but a wall with governments and passports and customs... There is already a wall of customs and passports to go in and out of Bethlehem and Hebron: Every time you go in or out of these cities you have to show your passport to the Israeli and Palestinian authorities, and you are at the mercy of the authority who checks you. Two years ago I saw a bus loaded with Christian and Arab children going to Bethlehem. The Israeli custom authority decided that the Arab children could not go into the city, because it was not their feast!... the other half of the Christian children got out also of the bus, refusing to enter if their Arab friends were not allowed... eventually all of them were allowed to enter Bethlehem... but there is a wall!.
