Pope John Paul II
visited at the monastery of St. Catherine, at the base of Mount Sinai and in the
shadow of Mount Herob, at right. The pope journeyed to Mount Sinai to walk in
the footsteps of Moses at the place where God is said to have given him the Ten
Commandments.
Another goal of the
pope's three-day visit to Egypt was to try to overcome old rifts with Orthodox
Christians, who make up the largest religious minority in predominantly Muslim
Egypt.

Sept. 1995: Ten years after his first visit
to Cameroon in 1985, the Pope made a trip that tested

political crises; he visited the capitals of Cameroon, South Africa, and Kenya.

a week in western Africa visiting Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Burkina Faso
and Chad.

Aug. 1985: The pontiff toured
north and central Africa for eight days visiting Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon,
Republic of Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Morocco.
