    Cuba, Jan. 21, 1998

      Cuba was the last Latin American country the pope had not visited until 1998. The pontiff accepted Castro's invitation to visit Cuba and said mass in Havana's Plaza of the Revolution. While visiting the communist country, the pope called for the creation of a new society offering "peace, justice and freedom" but warned of the dangers of capitalism.

Trips to the Caribbean:

    Dominican Republic, Jan. 1979, Oct. 1984, Oct. 9, 1992
     The Pope has made three trips to the Dominican Republic, twice as part of tours of Spanish-speaking countries and once for five days celebrating the 5th centenary of the evangelization of Latin America and for the Fourth General Conference of the Latin American Episcopate in 1992.

    Haiti, March 1983: The Pope has made one trip to Haiti as part of his eight-day voyage to Portugal, Central America and the Caribbean.

    Jamaica, Aug. 1993: He visited Jamaica, Mexico and the United States over a week in 1993.

    Bahamas, Jan. 1979: The pontiff visited the Bahamas during his first trip as pope, which also included a visit to the Dominican Republic and Mexico for the Third General Conference of the Latin American Bishops

    Netherlands Antilles, May 1990: The Pope visited Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles during an eight-day trip that also included Mexico

    St. Lucia, July 1, 1986: The Pope spent a week visiting Colombia and St Lucia.

    Trinidad and Tobago, Jan. 1985: The Pope spent 11 days visiting Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago
