Saint Leo IX, Pope, 1002-1049, Pilgrim Pope; Apostolic Pilgrim

The soldier-Pope, reformer of the Church, pilgrim to unite the Eastern and Western churches. Started the rule that the Popes should be elected by Cardinals. He added Italian regions to the Papal states, a war he personally directed, defeated and imprisoned.

Died 19 April 1054 at Rome, Italy
