Saints of the Day

Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, 1673-1716
The apostle of Virgin Mary and the total consecration to Jesus through Mary. His motto, "Totus Tuus", "Completely Yours, Mary" was taken by Pope John Paul II.

In 10 years as a priest he preached many missions, wrote several books, founded thre congregations, and lived as a poor, so much that oftentimes got him into trouble with Church authorities.

His main books were the True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin and The Secret of the Rosary, the Secret of Mary, Love of Eternal Wisdom, Letter to the Friends of the Cross, Methods of Saying the Rosary.

Saint Louis prophesied that the army of souls consecrated to Mary will be Her instrument in defeating the Devil and his Antichrist. As Satan gains power in the world, so much more shall the new Eve triumph over him and crush his head.

But when he wrote the True Devotion, the Devil told him he was wasting his time because nobody ever was going to read it... and the Devil was almost right, because the book was never published until a hundred years later when the manuscript was found while looking for his writings in the process of canonization... his book, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, has become a classic explanation of Marian devotion, and today the most common manner of reciting the Rosary is the method that originated with Saint Louis.

The Total Consecration to the Blessed Virgin is his greatest contribution to the Church and world.

John Paul II, when a youngster, wanted to be a theater artist, that's what he was pursuing in the school. He did the Total Consecration, and from that moment came into his mind the thought, "I want to be a priest"... no, no!, he kept repeating himself, "I want ot be a theater artist"... but you know the story, he became a priest!... and that's why he choose the motto of the Consecration as his motto as Bishop and later as Pope... "Totus Tuus", "Completely Yours, Mary".

His spirituality has been espoused by millions, especially Pope John Paul II, who has consecrated not only himself but every place he has visited as pope.

The essence of the Consecration is that God gave us Jesus through Mary, so now we give everything to Jesus through Mary following the same order of redemption.

    Three Congregations: Louis founded,

The Company of Mary, for priests and brothers
The Daughters of Wisdom, who cared especially for the sick.
The Brothers of St Gabriel, plus various groups of Lay people, called "Associates"
        The Montfortian Family

A life of a poor and a preacher:

He lived as a poor, so much that oftentimes got him into trouble with Church authorities. He took a walking trip from France to Rome and only took his vestments. Immediately, a beggar was without shoes, and gave him his. Just a half an hour later another beggar without dress, and he gave him his, keeping just the underwear all away to Rome... and considered by many as a fool.

He preached so forcefully and effectively against the errors of Jansenism that expelled from several dioceses in France. In Rome Pope Clement XI conferred on him the title and authority of Missionary Apostolic, which enabled him to continue his apostolate after returning to France.
In just 10 years, he gave hundreds of missions. He preached Mary everywhere and to everyone. A member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, Saint Louis was one of the greatest apostles of the Rosary
