Saints of the Day...and Events

Blessed Claude de la Colombiere, (1641-1682), Claudius de la Columbiere; Claude
The French Jesuit spiritual director  of Saint Margaret Mary of Alocoque and the Duchess of York in England who fought Jansenism with the Sacred Heart of Jesus humility

This is a special day for the Jesuits, who claim today’s saint as one of their own. It’s also a special day for people who have a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus—a devotion Claude de la Colombière promoted, along with his friend and spiritual companion, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The emphasis on God’s love for all was an antidote to the rigorous moralism of the Jansenists, who were popular at the time.

He was made superior of a small Jesuit residence in Burgundy. It was there he first encountered Margaret Mary Alacoque. For many years after he served  as Spiritual director of Saint Margaret Mary of Alocoque at Paray-le-Monial, France

He was next sent to England to serve as confessor to the Duchess of York. He preached by both words and by the example of his holy life, converting a number of Protestants. Tensions arose against Catholics and Claude, rumored to be part of a plot against the king, was imprisoned. He was ultimately banished, but by then his health had been ruined.

Born 2 February 1641 at Grenoble, France.  French nobility who felt a call to religious life from an early age. Jesuit in 1659
Died 15 February 1682 at Paray-le-Monial of hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
Beatified 16 June 1929 by Pope Pius XICanonized 31 May 1992 by Pope John Paul II in Rome

Readings
The past three centuries allow us to evalutate the importance of the message which was entrusted to Claude. In a period of contrasts between the fervor of some and the indifference or impiety of many, here is a devotion centered on the humility of Christ, on his presence, on his love of mercy and on forgiveness. Devotion to the Heart of Christ would be a source of balance and spiritual strengthening for Christian communities so often faced with increasing unbelief over the coming centuries.
- Pope John Paul II, during the canonization of Saint Claude
