The Archbishop of Toledo, Spain, n
oted writer, especially on Our Lady

    Spanish nobility. Nephew of Saint Eugene of Toledo. Studied at Seville under Saint Isidore of Seville.
    Monk at Agli (Agalia) on the River Tagus (Tajo) near Toledo while still a young man. Abbot at Agli. Attended the Council of Toledo in 653 and 655.
    Archbishop of Toledo in 657. Responsible for the unification of the Spanish liturgy.
    Noted writer, especially on Our Lady; only four of his works have survived. Reported to have received an apparition of the Virgin Mary during which she presented him with a chalice.

Servant of God Juan de Padilla (1492-1542)
 
    Juan came from southern Spain where he became a Franciscan. In 1526 he left for Mexico where he worked as a missionary in the states of Hidalgo and Jalisco.
 
    He was the first of at least 79 Franciscans martyred in the America.
