only four of his works have survived. Reported to have received an
apparition of the

during which she presented him with a
chalice.

Servant of God Juan de Padilla
(1492-1542)
Juan came from southern Spain where he became a
Franciscan. In 1526 he left for Mexico where he worked as a
missionary in the states of Hidalgo and Jalisco.
He was the first of
at least 79 Franciscans martyred in the America.
