Saints of the Day

Saint Turibius of Mogroveio, 1538-1606, Toribio Alfonso de Mongrovejo

From Mayorga, Leon, Spain, together with Rose of Lima, Archbishop Turibius is the first known saint of the New World, serving the Lord in Peru, South America, for 26 years

The Lord indeed writes straight with crooked lines. Against his will, and from the unlikely springboard of an Inquisition tribunal, this man became the Christ-like shepherd of a poor and oppressed people. God gave him the gift of loving others as they needed it.

Professor of law at Salamanca. Judge of the Court of the Inquisition at Granada. Archbishop of Lima, Peru. Founded the first seminary in the Western hemisphere. Fought for the rights of the natives against the Spanish masters. Organized councils and synods in the New World.
